TJ's Battle with Diabetes

Tj Borsos doesn't let type 1 diabetes slow him down. His resilience and determination are evident as he skillfully manages his condition while excelling in racing. Tj’s positive attitude and hard work inspire others, showing that with perseverance, no challenge is too great.

Understanding Type 1 Diabetes

When you have type 1 diabetes, your immune system mistakenly treats the beta cells in your pancreas that create insulin as foreign invaders and destroys them. When enough beta cells are destroyed, your pancreas can’t make insulin or makes so little of it that you need to take insulin to live.

Tj Borsos started racing at the age of 12 and has quickly learned the ropes. Gaining seat time and a few wins at his home track, the Northwest Ohio Quarter Midget Racing Association (also known as Toledo), he has shown great promise. This historic track has been in existence since 1960 at the same location within the Lucas County Fairgrounds. When he’s not at Toledo, Tj is racing almost every weekend somewhere in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and sometimes North Carolina, chasing a championship in the Midwest Thunder Series.

Now 14 years old, he was the 2024 Quad City Series Heavy 160 champion. Tj’s favorite tracks are too many to list, but he particularly enjoys the Carolina Clash because his mom, Tammy, is from near there. It’s like a family reunion, with everyone coming to cheer him on, and he gets to meet and race with friends from down south. Another favorite is the Ft. Wayne Rumble, always held between Christmas and New Year’s Day. This event is an indoor classic, hosting many past and present USAC open-wheel stars. It’s the largest and fastest quarter midget track in the nation, with quarter midgets approaching speeds of 65 mph and lap times rivaling those of full-size midgets.

Tj only has about three weeks off from racing each year, as he competes all winter long at the famous Hog Barn for the Columbus Indoor Winter Nationals, running from November through February. This indoor race boasts the toughest competition and conditions, with an ever-changing low grip concrete track and indoor temperatures ranging from 65° to a chilly 50°, making for interesting car setups and always thrilling MMA-style racing. Tj placed third in the overall points standings in his Unrestricted Animal class for the 2023/2024 season.

This year, Tj enjoyed the experience of the Battle at the Brickyard NASCAR Youth Series at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, bringing home a lower main win and the memories of taking a lap around the big track where legends of the Indy 500 have raced. Tj’s plans for the future are still uncertain, although baseball, basketball, and band keep him busy. He would like to pursue a performance motorsports education at UNOH and continue racing big cars, possibly non-winged USAC midgets. Getting the chance to hot lap a midget at Mohler Speedway was a highlight for sure.

Tj would like to thank his many sponsors, his mom and dad, and all of his family and fans.
